Italy Earthquake Death Toll Soars To 267

ROME,(UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News -26th Augst,2016) : The death toll after the powerful earthquake in central Italy has climbed to 267, the country's Civil Protection Department said on Friday. A total of 928 aftershocks have been registered in Italy over the past two days, La Repubblica newspaper reported citing the National Civil Protection Service.
Some 57 of them hit the country over the past 8 hours. Italy's rescuers have pulled 238 people alive from the rubble over the past 24 hours, the service said. Some 400 people have been injured in the quake, according to the newspaper.
More than 1,000 police officers, 1,060 firefighters, 400 military personnel and over 3,000 volunteers and members of public organizations are taking part in the rescue operation, earlier reports said.
A 6.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Italy at 3:36 a.m. local time (0136GMT) on August 24, with a 5.4-magnitude aftershock that followed the initial quake. The tremors affected a wide area in the Apennines, shocks were felt as far away as Perugia, Rieti and Norcia. The earthquake epicenter was registered in the Rieti province at a depth of 4 kilometers.
