Vinesh Phogat, who defeated Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman in the 50kg category semi-final, was set to face America's Sarah Hildebrandt in the final today
PARIS: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-August 7th, 224) India's star wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from competing for a gold medal in the Paris Olympics due to being just 100 grams over the weight limit.
Vinesh Phogat, who defeated Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman in the 50kg category semi-final, was set to face America's Sarah Hildebrandt in the final today.
The sources told the Indian newspaper The Indian Express that on Tuesday night, Phogat's weight was approximately 2 kilograms over the limit. She spent the entire night jogging, skipping, and cycling to reduce her weight. However, in the morning, she was still 100 grams over the 50-kilogram limit.
Due to being 100 grams over the limit, the Indian Olympic Association confirmed her disqualification at 8:30 AM Paris time.
In their statement, the Indian Olympic Association said that despite the best efforts of the team throughout the night, Phogat's weight was still slightly over 50 kilograms this morning, resulting in her disqualification from the competition.
This disqualification has cost Phogat the opportunity to become the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the Olympics.
According to the Olympics website, Sarah Hildebrandt will now compete in the final against Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman, whom Vinesh Phogat had defeated in the semi-final.
