Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun reportedly criticizes the platform for allegedly blocking condolence posts regarding killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key official of Hamas.
ANKARA: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-August 2nd, 2024) The Turkish authorities on Friday blocked access to the social media platform Instagram.
The infotech regulator confirmed the development.
Turkey blocked the platform without specifying the reason or duration for the ban.
The users also faced problems regarding access through the cell phones.
The action came after Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun criticized the platform on Wednesday for allegedly blocking condolence posts regarding the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a key official of Hamas.
“This is censorship, pure and simple,” stated Altun, the communications director of the Turkish presidency, on X, noting that Instagram had not cited any policy violations for its action.
Turkey’s Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) published the August 2 decision on its website.
Meta Platforms Inc, the parent company of Instagram, has not yet commented on either the ban or Altun’s remarks.
