Experts to formulate 'Intended Nationally Determined Contributions'
for COP-22: Zahid Hamid

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Augst,2016) : Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid Thursday said that the ministry had constituted a team of experts to formulate Pakistan's Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) for presenting in the 22nd session of the Conference of Parties (COP-22) to be held in November in Morocco. INDCs is a term used under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by the COP member countries.

"This will help identify that where we stand and what efforts are required for mitigation and adaptation in the climate change," said the minister while chairing a meeting to review preparation for the COP-22.

Among others, the meeting was attended by ambassador of France Martine Dorance, ambassador of Morocco Mustapaha Salahdine, representatives of Environmental Protection Agency Punjab, UNDP, minister of Water and Power, Finance, Foreign Affairs and Climate Change, and provincial Disaster Management Authority (KPK), Environmental Protection Agency (Sindh), National University of Science and Technology, Quaid i Azam University, Islamabad, SDPI, International Union of Conservation of Nature and Pakistan Meteorological Department.

French ambassador said "We have to learn lessons from COP-21 to actively participate in COP-22. It was a big gathering having participation of officials, private sector, civil society, media and others stakeholders." He said that Pakistan signed the Paris agreement this year in April and taking initiatives for its implementation.

The ambassador of Morocco said "We have formulated a steering committee having experts to organize and take care of arrangements of COP-22." Deputy Head of INDC Bilal Anwer said that the ministry had taken 2015 as base year to calculate INDCs because a lot of economic activities took place between 2012 to 2015.
