Olympics: Champion Meares crashes out of sprint

RIO DE JANEIRO, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 15th August, 2016) - Reigning champion Anna Meares was knocked out of the Olympic women's track cycling sprint competition in Rio on Monday. The two-time Olympic and 11-time world champion lost her second round race against Lee Wai Sze of Hong Kong, putting her into the repechage.

There though, she faced world champion Zhong Tianshi of China, who was surprisingly beaten by Russia's Anastasiia Voinova in her second round race. Zhong was the one who would get another bite at the cherry, though, as she beat Meares to qualify for the quarter-finals. British pair Becky James, the 2013 world champion, and Katy Marchant both sailed into the quarter-finals having topped the qualifying times on Sunday -- James even breaking the Olympic record of now retired team-mate Victoria Pendleton.
