UK Foreign Minister To Seek Mexico's Support For UK's Bid To Join Trans-Pacific Pact

LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd September, 2021) UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will visit Mexico on Thursday to discuss a new and updated bilateral free trade agreement and seek the Latin American country's support for London's bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

"Closer ties with Mexico are a key part of our plan to strengthen economic, security and diplomatic links with like-minded allies who share our belief in free enterprise and free trade. A trade deal with Mexico, for example, will pave the way for us to join the CPTPP, one of the world's biggest free trade areas," Truss was quoted as saying.

In February, as part of its post-Brexit strategy to secure free trade deals with different countries, the British government officially applied to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is currently made up of Japan, Canada, Australia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Singapore, Mexico, Peru, Brunei, Chile and Malaysia.

According to the UK government, joining the TPP could see 99.9% of UK exports being eligible for tariff-free trade between its members.

The UK foreign secretary, who will travel to Mexico directly from the UN General Assembly in New York, will also formally open the new embassy in Mexico City after the previous one was damaged during the 2017 earthquake.

She will also attend a dinner with celebrity British-Mexican chef Fernando Stovell, who has held three Michelin stars.
