WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2021) The United States opens a new counterintelligence probe targeting the Chinese government or individuals acting on its behalf every 12 hours, FBI Director Christopher said in a congressional testimony on Wednesday.
"I believe that China, and by that I mean the Peoples Republic of China government, the Chinese Communist Party, not the Chinese people, that there's no country that represents a more significant counterintelligence threat or a more significant threat to our innovation, our economic security and our ideas," Wray told the US House Homeland Security Committee.
Wray added that on average, the FBI opens a new China-related counterintelligence investigation every 12 hours and that 2,000 investigations remain open.
The FBI director explained that the frequency of opening investigations is "not because our agents are looking around for something to do," but because "there's a need."
An FBI has cited Chinese systematic theft of intellectual property and cyber intrusions targeting US businesses, academic institutions, researchers and lawmakers as the agency's top counterintelligence priority.
