Seven Afghan Female Lawmakers Arrive in Greece as Refugees - Athens

Athens has received and will temporarily accommodate seven former Afghan female lawmakers with their families as part of Greece's international humanitarian assistance commitments, the Greek foreign ministry said on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd September, 2021) Athens has received and will temporarily accommodate seven former Afghan female lawmakers with their families as part of Greece's international humanitarian assistance commitments, the Greek foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

"A few hours ago, seven Afghan women MPs arrived in Athens, via Tbilisi, accompanied by their family members. The aforementioned persons were evacuated from Afghanistan as a result of the actions of the New York-based NGO 'Zaka Khan,'" the ministry said in a statement.

The Greek Foreign Ministry and the Migration and Asylum Ministry are coordinating efforts on the arrival and stay of the Afghan lawmakers in the country in line with the government's commitment to welcome a certain amount of Afghan migrants who fled their homeland in fear of the Taliban (a terrorist group, banned in Russia).

The lawmakers are due to remain in Greece shortly before they are transported and resettled in the United States, according to the statement.

The Taliban entered the Afghan capital of Kabul in mid-August, and several weeks later took over the last standing province of Panjshir, completing the large-scale offensive across the country.

States worldwide have received limited numbers of Afghan refugees evacuated from the Central Asian nation on evacuation flights that were conducted from Kabul until August 31 along with the withdrawal of foreign forces.
