Somalia Resumes Diplomatic Relations With Kenya - Government Spokesperson

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2021) Somalia has restored diplomatic relations with Kenya, spokesperson for the Somali Federal government Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu said.

"#Somalia resumes Diplomatic ties with #Kenya based on mutual benefit & respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-external interference, peaceful co-existence & equality," the spokesperson wrote on his Twitter page on Thursday.

According to the official, the presidents of the two countries thanked Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for the mediation efforts.

Somalia broke off its diplomatic ties with Kenya in December after the leader of the breakaway self-proclaimed Republic of Somaliland had visited Kenya.

Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, and while it maintains relations with some countries on the continent, including Kenya, it is not recognized by any nation or organization.
