MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th April, 2021) The phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden was initiated by Washington and can be regarded as a step away from confrontation toward dialogue, Leonid Slutsky, the chairman of the international affairs committee of the Russian Duma, stated on Tuesday.
"It was Biden who expressed interest in establishing stable and predictable cooperation on pressing issues, such as the Iranian nuclear program, the situation in Afghanistan, global climate change. This means that the US side, who initiated the conversation, made the first step from confrontation to dialogue," Slutsky said.
According to the lawmaker, this position serves the interests of the two countries and benefits global security.
Slutsky also noted that it is "good news" that "the leaders of the two largest nuclear powers have confirmed their readiness to cooperate on issues of strategic stability and arms control."
Earlier in the day, the two heads of state held a phone conversation on current issues and discussed the possibility of a personal high-level meeting in the foreseeable future.
