Football: Sporting Kansas City tame Red Bulls to win US Open Cup

Sporting Kansas City defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-1 to win the US Open Cup for the third time in six years on Wednesday

LOS ANGELES, Sept 21, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Sep, 2017 ) - Sporting Kansas City defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-1 to win the US Open Cup for the third time in six years on Wednesday.

Sporting took the lead through a Latif Blessing header before Daniel Salloi sprang the offside trap to make it 2-0 midway through the second half. Bradley Wright-Phillips pulled a goal back in injury time to give the Red Bulls hope but Sporting held on to claim the win in front of a delighted home crowd at Children's Mercy Park.

The US Open Cup is American soccer's oldest club competition, dating back to 1913-1914 when it was known as the National Challenge Cup. The knockout tournament is open to teams from Major League Soccer, clubs from the second and third tiers of American soccer as well as amateur teams.

Sporting Kansas City's fourth victory in the tournament on Wednesday puts them alongside Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders as the teams with the most wins in the competition.
