Seville, Spain, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Nov, 2017 ) :Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo believes a combination of the Premier League's riches and the arrival of top coaching talent has fuelled the resurgence of English clubs in the Champions League this season.
Liverpool travel to the south of Spain to take on Berizzo's side at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Tuesday with a win for either side enough to guarantee their place in the last 16. After years of Spanish dominance in Europe, English sides are leading the way this season with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur already through to the knockout rounds and Manchester United and Chelsea well set to join them.
No English side has won the Champions League since Chelsea's triumph in 2012, while La Liga sides have won the last four editions of the tournament and claimed the trophy six times since Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow in 2008.
Barcelona and holders Real Madrid share those six victories three apiece. However the Premier League's expensively assembled squads, which have flattered to deceive in recent years, now also boast many of the continent's best coaches with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho at Manchester City and United respectively, Antonio Conte leading Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs.
"The arrival of (those) coaches has varied the way English teams play," Berizzo said on Monday. "They have made them dominate the ball as well as having the financial power to buy very good players." Sevilla have been inconsistent in Berizzo's first year in charge following the double blow of losing long-time sporting director Monchi to Serie A club Roma and former coach Jorge Sampaoli to the Argentine national team.
However, they sit just two points off the top four in La Liga and Berizzo believes a landmark win over the five-time European champions will kickstart their campaign. The Spaniards trail Group E leaders Liverpool by a point with Spartak Moscow two points further back with two games remaining.
However, with Spartak travelling to Anfield on matchday six, a win will guarantee Sevilla's place in the knockout phase. "We have a great opportunity to seal our first objective," added Berizzo.
"We are up against a great team but we will be supported by our fans in a stadium where we feel very strong." Sevilla are unbeaten in their last 25 home games since Barcelona's victory at the Sanchez Pizjuan in November 2016.
