Justice (r) Nasir-ul-Mulk to serve as Caretaker PM

PM Abbasi and Opposition Leader Shah announced the name in a press conference on Monday

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 28th May, 2018) The name of caretaker prime minister has finally been decided.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Oppositon Leader Khurshid Shah have reached a consensus upon the name of Justice (r) Nasir-ul-Mulk to serve as interim prime minister.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Monday, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that this is an important day in the democratic journey of the country. The process of consultation was underway for six weeks and the decision was not easy.

Announcing the name, Oppositon Leader Khurshid Shah said that all the Names were on merit and there were no doubts in their credibility.

"The name we have decided is very respectable and that is of Justice (r) Nasir-ul-Mulk," he announced.

The prime minister and the opposition leader held their 6th meeting today in Islamabad to decide about the caretaker prime minister.

The incumbent government will complete its term on May 31. Following this, a caretaker set-up will take place which will be responsible to hold the next general elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced holding general elections on July 25.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had suggested three names to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for caretaker prime minister. These included Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and Ishrat Hussain.

The names suggested by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf included Tassaduq Jilani and Ishrat Hussain while the PPP had suggested the names of Jalil Abbas Jilani and Zaka Ashraf for caretaker prime minister.

Justice (r) Nasir-ul-Mulk had served as the 22nd Chief Justice of Pakistan. He was nominated as the chief justice by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 2014. He also served as the acting Chief Election Commissioner from November 30, 2013 to July 6, 2014.
