Hundreds of patients were landed in all three major hospitals of Peshawar due to overeating of meat products during three days of Eid holidays
PESHAWAR, Sept 4 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 04th Sep, 2017 ) : Hundreds of patients were landed in all three major hospitals of Peshawar due to overeating of meat products during three days of Eid holidays.
Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), Hayatabad Medical Complex(HMC) and Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) in Peshawar have received hundreds of patients for consuming excessive red meat during three days of Eidul Azha.
Dr Asif, a Medical Officer at Male Ward in Emergency Department LRH told APP that over 800 patients were brought to the hospital during last 24 hours with complaints of stomach pains, gastroenteritis, diarrhea, dehydration, food poisoning and omitting, which was apparently caused by an overeating of red meat during Eid holidays.
"Most of the cases were not serious and patients including men, children and women were discharged after provision of basic treatment to them," he maintained. He said un-properly cooked meat, overeating and low intake of water and other liquid materials during eating can cause serious health problems besides putting extra pressure on human digestive system.
"A person normally eats half-a-plate of meat on a normal day and then on Eid days stuffs himself with about four plates of meat in one day, such person was definitely going to upset his stomach," he cautioned.
He said people should not eat more than 70 grams of meat a day, because overeating can cause various problems, such as blood pressure, heart attack, rise in cholesterol and uric acid etc. Dr Asif said one of the patients who brought to LRH had gotten a bone stuck in his throat after attempting to eat without chewing it, adding the bone was later successfully removed.
He said some people use animal fat as oil, which is mostly unhygienic, adding vegetable oil should be used for cooking and people should avoid eating all the dishes, made of meat on regular basis.
He advised people to properly cook meat, chewed and consume it as per their body requirements by taking proper intake of liquid and avoid during lunch and dinner imperative for proper functioning of digestive system.
He suggested the use of yoghurt and fruit with meat to avoid complications. Dr maintained that barbecue dishes should be fully cooked, as partially cooked meat takes much longer to digest than cooked food and putting extra pressure on digestive system and other organs of the body.
Dr Asif instructed people to take a balanced diet necessary to avoid heart attack, diabetic and hypertension in future. The clinics in certain neighborhood are closed during Eid holidays so patients visit mainstream hospitals that sometimes caused overcrowding in the emergency wards of Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar.
He appealed people to come with patient with attendant as extra people can disrupt smooth process of treatment in emergency wards. Muhammad Khan, a Kurram Agency currently living in Pajagai road Peshawar told APP that he felt pain in stomach last morning followed by omitting due to excessive easting of meat and was rushed to LRH.
He complained about lack of doctors, nurses and paramedics staff to look after such a huge number of patients during Eid holidays and demanded fixation of duties of more doctors and paramedics during vacations in Khyber Pakthunkhwa.
