Insomnia Is A Symptom Of Serious Medical Illness: Dr Riaz

HYDERABAD , (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 13th Sep, 2017 ) :10 percent of general and 50 percent of clinical population in the country are suffering from detectable mental illnesses, especially insomnia and that is all due to terrorism, intolerance, power outages, inflation, egotistic attitudes, greed and stresses associated with modern lifestyle.
Talking to APP hereon Wednesday consultant Neuro and spinal Surgeon, and Assistant professor of the department of the Neurosurgery of the Liaquat Universty of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, Dr.Riaz Ahmed Raja said that insomnia is a common condition that can last for a short period of time or for a long period of time.
Dr Riaz said that the insomnia is not actually an illness but it is only a symptom of far more bigger problems and insomnia consequences can be very serious. He said that sleep problems may represent a symptom of depression and the risk of severe insomnia is much higher in patients with major depressive disorders.
Studies show that insomnia can also trigger or worsen depression, added. He said that people should keep up a balance in their life. Discipline of life requires proper sleep, work, pray, exercise, diet, good social relationship, expression of your feelings, spirit to fight against mental stress, and consult with a doctor in case of any health complain ,Dr Riaz Raja informed.
About the symptoms of insomnia he said insomnia disturbed the person included problems falling asleep at night, frequently waking up during the night, waking up too early, and feeling sleepy during the day easily.
He said that change of environment or work schedule is very necessary. He further said that the eating too much and too late in the evening and consuming a small snack before bed is right but indulging on chocolate covered coffee or tea after eating a late dinner, is not good because eating too much too late may cause person feel uncomfortable and keep awake.
Dr.Riaz said that sleeping is a very important process for the human body functioning and lack or surplus of sleep can lead to different problems during the daytime activities and insomnia consequences can be really serious and harm person physical and mental health, he informed.
He further informed that such medical conditions as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and many others can lead to long term insomnia. He said that as long as it is a complex problem there is no simple solution but the best way to do something within somniais exercise.
He suggested that the person should talk to their doctor before starting to take sleeping pills because there can be counter-indications for that and sleeping pills could be even fatal if taken together with alcohol or some other drugs.
