Senate Body Reviews PSM Retired Employees' Issues

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 12th Oct, 2017 ) :Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production on Thursday reviewed the issues of retired employees of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) who are not being paid their provident funds and pensions for several months.
Chairman of the Committee Senator Hidayatullah said PSM was an important national asset and its employees must be given their due rights. Senator Taj Haider said the government does not want to run Steel Mill.
Senator Orangzeb stressed that exploitation of Pakistan Steel Mill should be stopped and called for evolving a policy to bring the PSM out of crisis. Chief Financial Officer of PSM Arif Sheikh informed the committee that provident funds ranging from 2008-09 to June 2015 had been paid to the employees whereas since 2013, no gratuity had been paid to the retiring employees of PSM.
He informed that the PSM has to pay arrears to Rs 10.8 billion to the retired employees. Expressing deep concerns over the issue, the committee directed ministries of finance, law, and privatization to present in the next meeting of standing committee on Industries.
The meeting was attended by minister of state for Industries and production Sardar Muhammad Arshad Khan Leghari, Senators Malik Najam ul Hassan, Kulsoom Perveen, Mian Muhamamd Atique Sheikh, Khanzada Khan, Taj Haider, Khalda Perveen and Orangzeb Khan
