UVAS launches drip irrigation system at Ravi Campus

The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore has launched drip irrigation system at its Ravi Campus Pattoki to save precious water under an Agricultural Water Efficiency Project funded by the Nestle Pakistan

LAHORE (Pakistan Point News - 9th Oct, 2018 ) The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore has launched drip irrigation system at its Ravi Campus Pattoki to save precious water under an Agricultural Water Efficiency Project funded by the Nestle Pakistan.

Nestle Pakistan’s Chief Executive Officer Freda Duplan accompanied by UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha and other officials inaugurated the project by unveiling a project plaques and watering newly-planted saplings.

Freda Duplan and other officials of the water company also planted mango plants on the occasion. While listing the benefits of the drip irrigation system, the UVAS Agriculture Officer Jamshaid Ahmad told Mrs Duplan and the Vice-Chancellor that the drip system saves a lot of water and time. He said that 15 million liters water is saved annually by watering the UVAS orchard through the drip irrigation system. It takes only 45 minutes to water all plants of the orchard spread over about seven acre land while earlier it took more than 24 hours to water these plants through flood irrigation system, the officer said, adding that canal water is being used in the drip system which also controls salinity.

Freda Duplan also visited Central Laboratory Centre comprising food Chemistry Lab, Food Safety Lab, Embryology Lab, Animal Nutrition Lab, Diagnostic Lab, Meat Technology Lab, Bio-imaging Lab, etc, where university researchers briefed her on labs functioning and benefits.

Earlier in a meeting, the Vice-Chancellor gave a presentation to the visiting dignitary on the UVAS functioning, various campuses, faculties, research, extension and training programmes, national and international linkages, university ranking among top Asian universities, etc. Prof Pasha said that applied research is priority of the university and currently Rs 1,261 million research projects won on competitive basis from national and international funding agencies are being executed by the UVAS faculty members.

He said that due to its quality education and research, the UVAS has been ranked among top Asian universities by the QS and Times Higher Education ranking. The CEO Nestlé Pakistan Ms Freda Duplan led a delegation comprising Head of Corporate Affairs Waqar Ahmad, , Head of Technical Amr Rehan, Head of Agri Services Adeel Aali, Corporate Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Manager Dr Farhat Jameel, Dairy Development Manager Sohail Sarwar, Supplier Dev.& Sustainable Agri. Manager Mehboob Elahi, Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Allah Buksh, Assistant Mgr. Corporate Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Mian Mitha and Public Affairs Manager Aatekah Mir-Khan paid visits University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Ravi Campus Pattoki on Tuesday.
