NSCW Launches Campaign Against Gender Based Violence

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Nov, 2016 ) : National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) launched a national campaign against Gender Based Violence (GBV) leading to 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence celebrated every year from November 25 to December 10.
The campaign, that specifically focuses on involving men to advocate against Violence Against Women (VAW), will be simultaneously run throughout the country in collaboration with White Ribbon Campaign.
It is aimed at promoting motivating and informative messages on how to control VAW through different communications tools including posters, television and radio messages as well as a social media pledge campaign with hash tag "Take Pledge Today." The campaign is also joined by famous actor Ahsan Khan who was part of the launch event and joined the social media campaign to show his support for the cause.
Ahsan said that for success of any such campaign, men engagement is of vital importance. He appreciated the fact that there are more and more dramas on subjects which were considered a taboo few years back.
"Unless and until we start discussing such issues, we would not be able to find solutions," he said. Chairperson NCSW Khawar Mumtaz talked about the legislative measures taken by the Federal and provincial government during past decade.
Referring to this year's theme of 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence that is "Peace in the Home to Peace in the Society", she said that every effort in this direction is appreciable but the change begins form home.
Chief Executive Officer for White Ribbon Campaign Omar Aftab discussed different types of violence against women ranging from psychological to physical and said that many forms of violence against women as social accepted as a normal behavior.
Chairperson Commission of the Status of Women for Azad Jammu and Kashmir Maria Iqbal Tarana urged women to come out of their helplessness and become role models for the coming generations. She criticized television dramas for inculcating negative message and fear among women.
